A somewhat enticing yet eventually disappointing little film considering its written by Peter Morgan (The Queen), it’s director is Clint Eastwood (the Great) and the producer is Steven Spielberg (the God.) So where did it go wrong? The movie opens with a tsunami that overtakes the town and all ts people within moments. We feel (probably the only time in the film) the impact of watching such an atrocity bestowed on these people by the power of the sea. One of them is a French Journalist who has a near death experience. On the other side of the world is a young boy whose twin brother is accidentally killed, and finally there’s Matt Damon a young man with psychic powers who refuses to use his skills for those in need. And that’s where the first problem begins. Why do we care about a man who doesn’t care about himself? Why don’t we know WHY he won’t help these people? Was his own mother hit by a bus? Unlike those whose lives are vacant, changed and in pain, Matt’s life has no urgency for us to care. High hopes for a movie that never quite pays off and has an incredible lack of structure 2 tiaras

An adaptation of the critically-acclaimed off-Broadway rock theater hit, Hedwig tells the story of an “internationally ignored” rock singer and almost transsexual. Born in East Germany and transplanted by an American G.I. to a trailer park in Kansas, Hedwig explores the peculiar notion of fame American-style. This campy flick stars John Cameron Mitchell best known for the success of his off-Broadway version. While the film earned him awards at both the Sundance and Berlin festivals this year, it’s almost too disturbing to be entertaining and seems to drag on like the drag queens. The soundtrack, however, is the movie’s saving grace.

Based on the best-selling book by Stephen King is the story of Bobby Garfield (David Morse) who returns to his childhood roots to attend the funeral of his boyhood best pal, Sully, who wills him his baseball glove. Upon returning, Bobby steps back in time to the memories of yesteryear as a small boy (Anton Yelchin as the young Bobby), living alone with his self-absorbed mother (Hope Davis), who can’t seem to understand that in his eyes, boyish issues are as huge as her adult ones. Through loneliness, death of his father, and eager for a male mentor, Bobby places his secrets and trust in the hands of the new upstairs tenant Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) who has special ESP ability. But, the movie is less about telepathic powers and more about issues of the heart. Bobby splits his love between Brautigan, his little girlfriend Carol (Mika Boorem) and pal Sully (Will Rothhaar), where mind-over-matter-awakenings prevail and timing is everything. Director Scott (Shine) Hicks has another Oscar contender on his hands with young stars who effortlessly manage to keep up with the seasoned and unmatchable Hopkins. No more awaiting a good movie in 2001! Hearts In Atlantis is a small beautiful film with a big warm story, that will do wonders to your own heart.

How’s this for a premise? A mother-daughter con artist teaming to swindle men. With a biological mother like this who needs a wicked stepmother? Sigourney Weaver stars as the brassy, sexy mom proving age is a state of mind and that men think through their – well, you know what! Jennifer Love Hewitt dressed in Gap Kid-size tee shirts for dresses, is the daughter who decides she’s old enough now to go solo from the maternal nest. When she finds her true love in Jason Lee, a surfer dude, all hell breaks lose. Every time the story tends to stray with the pranks getting old, the duo make for a quick recovery with more twists and turns. Gene Hackman attached to a chain of cigarettes is hilarious as one of their targets, but it’s Ray Liotta who has finally landed a non-stifling role, that commands the screen. Carrie Fischer as an attorney and Anne Bancroft putting in a few surprises as the grand dame of con artists.
