Angelina Jolie stars as Lara Croft, an Indiana-Jones-esque video game spin-off worth the price of admission if you’re a young boy going gaga over Jolie’s machine gun shooting, bungee-cord jumping and motorcycle riding all in that wow-em Barbie Doll body. Directed by Simon “Con Air” West, it’s the story of an English heiress who’s a cross between James Bond, Indiana Jones and Batman yet doesn’t follow any particular game in the series. Instead weaving in various “crackpot theories” about planetary alignment, sacred geometry and exotic religions, Lara searches for pieces of a device “that can manipulate time”. Real life father John Voight portrays her dead father. We may not need another Super Mario Bros./Double Dragon spin off, but Jolie holds her own just to watch her pace across the screen with new founded style that feels more like a Merchant-Ivory film with a motorcycle crashing through the screen. Teenage boys bring your shooting hormones.
