A roadtrip of a different sort and that’s probably because it’s two Brits (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon) playing themselves with all the typical banter, mimicking and a lot of self-deprecating humor. All the things we’ve come to adore about Englishmen. The story is that Coogan is off on a magazine assignment to cover the menus of the English northern lake towns. When none of his friends will ride shotgun, he calls upon the Welsh-born pal, Brydon, a semi-curmudgeon who spends all his travel time imitating everyone from Pacino to Bond. James Bond. The two grow closer as the miles grow longer and soon we have a version of Paul Giamatti’s Sideways albeit set in the UK with eating, talking, insulting and lots of inner soul searching on a British level. Meaning nothing is ever quite accomplished. Alot of wrist-ringing discoveries and complaining. Apparently the film is based on a hit BBC sitcom, but in the end it doesn’t amount to much and one can’t be sure it was intended to in the first place. Just more of an exploration of two men trying to be a little more actor than either of them thought they had in them. Two tiaras
