Set during the Cold War of 1960 when America sent its first Polaris missile submarine on patrol (just a year before the Cuban Missile Crisis). This K19 may be full of leaks, unready and full of surprises for the equally unready crew, but the movie itself, is solid and prepared. Not since “Das Boot” has there been a submarine classic until this Russia-in-mood testosterone driven film, even though it’s directed by Kathryn “Point Break” Bigelow, a woman. A change in command brings an unexpected Capt. Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) and Captain Polenin (Liam Neeson) together and the dueling egos begin. Executive produced by Ford as well, he’s at home in this star-powered lead that made him the star we love. A male driven story with nerve-racking, edge-of-our-seat scenarios, there’s no room for romance. Hunky leads (Ford is gritty steel – Neeson more crew friendly),have their opposing opinions that clash eloquently to deliver solid performances.
