— Well, we can start with this movie. Larry “Curb You Enthusiasm” David, and master of his “Seinfeld” domain, steps into a role as Borris, a miserable, sarcastic, rude, condescending curmudgeon of an older, Jewish, guy who falls for a young southern ditz (Evan Rachel Wood). She’s clueless and energized and feels like she’s channeling a ditzy Amy Adams. Of course about twenty minutes into the film one can’t help but say “now wait a second here…” is Writer/Director Woody Allen making a statement about his current daughter-turned-wife relationship with Soon-Yi. Nevertheless, no matter what you pick up on, the movie’s message is to simply be open to whatever life delivers. Ed Begley Jr. and Patricia Clarkson play Wood’s southern preachy parents who end up losing their judgmental qualities in an effort to find themselves. Clarkson does such a head-spinning performance as a Southern Belle turned Bohemian artist. (She should start thinking about her Oscar gown for next year’s awards.) But while the movie has some laugh-out-loud funny lines, anybody who loves Allen’s long and cherished movie history is sure to recognize the same old/same old. Two and a half tiaras
