Set in Florence in 1938, the story follows a young penniless British widow (Kristen Scott Thomas) who becomes involved with an American playboy (Sean Penn) in pre-WWI Tuscany, while debating about marriage to a friend (James Fox). The love triangle serves as the basis for a story with steamy love scenes and political intrigue involving an Australian refugee (Jeremy Davies) and a Fascist leader (Massimo Ghini).
