When the NFL goes on strike, who you gonna call? A bunch of second string ex college players, that’s who. They may not play football, but they make for one of this year’s best comedies with heart and soul. Starring Keanu Reeves, who usually can’t act, this time has married the perfect role as a quarterback. Based loosely on the 1987 NFL strike and directed by Howard Deutch (Grumpier Old Men and The Odd Couple II) comes a story with guts, love, passion, and boy does it score! This rag-tag team delivers on every level. Gene Hackman resurrects his “Hoosiers” coaching days as the man who must get these sorry boys back into shape. Think “Full Monty” on a football field and it’s quickly clear the type of underdog drive this one delivers.
