Every male gender’s nightmare comes to life when Andy (Steve Carell) an audio salesman by day, and a virgin by night, after night after night, is playing poker with his buddies who discover his dark secret. Two of them are total pigs about women while one is a more spiritually evolved ‘love maker’, and then there’s poor Andy, so his buddies set out on a mission to de-flower him. Andy ‘respects and loves women so much, that he consistently stays away from them’, is his excuse. Moving into classic Will Farrell or Mike Meyers territory now, Carell is an instant hit, covering lots of virgin territory, constantly reinventing the plot (just as the audience thinks the story line can’t sustain two hours). It does. Carell’s possible victim/love interest is gently and convincingly portrayed by Catherine Keener, in this ironic, ‘sleeper’ hit of the summer.
