This is the dramatic and vibrant story of an unlikely equine champion who became a Depression era sensation. Red Pollard (Tobey Maguire) is an orphaned boxer-turned jockey, who despite being blind in one eye, rode the grumpy bowlegged Seabiscuit to glory. It seems the horse and Pollard have something in common and trainer (Chris Cooper) is responsible for the union, since he recognizes that while nobody understands feisty Pollard or his horse, the two understand each other. Jeff Bridges does a convincing, significant role as Charles Howard the automobile magnate, who has his own tragedies to deal with. Together the four misfits manage a thoroughbred dream as the movie moves with building tension and hope, by easing into the drama and history so beautifully. In a time with movie retreads and action sequels, Seabiscuit feels like an old-fashioned movie with today’s sophistication and technology so that you feel like you’re the one in the saddle. For all ages. The perfect date for you and Grandpa.
