(Rated PG)
Based on the theme of the original 1969 kid’s show the stars keep asking “Where are you, Scooby Doo!” The answer is easy. The goofy Great Dane has been transformed decades later by enhanced CGI right in front of us and it certainly works. But what about the movie itself? Possibly the most expensive Freddie Prinze Jr. movie ever made. “Zoinks! Yikes, like, who knew, Scoob?” Prinze plays Fred, the ascot-wearing heartthrob. Remember him? His pals-in-tow include the original go-go boot babe Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), the brainy not-so-attractive Velma (Linda Cardellini) and everybody’s favorite Shaggy (Matthew Lillard; Prinze’s last year’s co-star in “Summer Catch”). Putting their egos and differences aside, the three re-bond after an anonymous letter leads them to spring break. Hanna Barbera did well with “Flintstones’ making a rock solid box office hit but “Josie And The Pussycats” was a feline frenzy, but this 700 million dollar franchise, well — Doo in 2002 may just work. This generation of retro fans will love it but us old timers will stick to the original and find this one somewhat annoying.
