(Rated PG-13, 102 mins.)
It’s the year 2022 and Quinn (Christian Bale “American Psycho”) is a grown fire chief. Years before, as a child, his mother, a construction engineer inadvertently woke an enormous fire-breathing dragon from its centuries-long slumber. Today Quinn is determined to keep his town in nearby London safe and alive. Enter Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey) shaved head and attitude who has a way to slay dragons foreign to the tempered Quinn. Full of Salamanders, loud noises, reptiles and bloody dragons in dark, dank castles, this medieval past fused with post apocalyptic future, spells McConaughey moving from “Fight Club” multiplied by ten, as a dragon-slayer. While the story is a great premise of yesteryear “Godzilla” feel, it lacks oomph. McConaughey, however has lots of oomph and looks buff though the story spends too much time on Bale. Directed by “X Files” Rob Bowman with equally slick visuals and a feeling that hits your anticipation nerve (think “Jaws”). Certain to give kids nightmares for years.
