Anxiety sells since the days of “Jaws”. But after this couple’s getaway, you may think twice about a little Caribbean scuba diving this winter. It’s an Australian true story filmed in the Bahamas. Those are real sharks in the water and there are no special effects, yet lots of big effects. So take that “Spider Man”. The thing about this documentary thriller is that it’s real. And it feels real. It was filmed on a shoe string budget, much with the hype of say, “Blair Witch Project” but it touches a core we are all familiar with. Unknown actors, Susan (Blanchard Ryan) is married to Daniel (Daniel Travis) and like any everyday marriage, we watch them have their lover moments and lover spats during a supposed-to-be normal vacation. But also like any marriage we watch them under the worst kind of pressure, as their moods swing from “we’ll be okay”, to anger, to fear and finally to resignation, when Mother Nature bares her teeth on them. But unlike “Jaws” or “Blair Witch” there’s no cheap hoax. In the end, you’ll be feeling emotionally drained in a way no mechanical shark could scare us 1970’s style.
