Written and directed by Sundance Screenwriters Lab grad Gina Prince-Bythewood, the story caught the eye of Spike Lee, who backed the project, so don’t expect a “sports” or “black” movie. This one has a flavor all its own. A story told in four quarters, Love and Basketball follows Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (Omar Epps), childhood adversaries and talented athletes who have a love for the game of basketball and each other both on and off the court. Each pursues their dreams of success in the sport but also the personal hurdles that go along with it. Also stars Alfre Woodard who has a minor role which is a shame since his acting is usually as well-delivered as the rest of this movie’s cast.
