Lars (Ryan Gosling) can’t seem to function at the office, at home or even with women in general. Not until he orders a real girl – a doll actually – from an internet company. Suddenly the blow up device draws him out by doing absolutely nothing. Adding to his delusions, the story revolves around this imaginary girlfriend so much so that the entire town, including Lars’s sister-in-law (Emily Mortimer) and his brother (Paul Schneider) contribute to her ‘realness’ for the sake of his mental state. It’s actually their family doctor (Patricia Clarkson) who encourages them to be supportive of his toy friend in hopes of a climatic ending to snap him out of it. Gosling does an incredible job (as always) in taking on completely consuming the role.  Yet despite this movie being amusing and certainly original, it’s simply too-far-fetched to amount to anything.  In other words, how far would a loved one go – including financially – to contribute to this nonsense?
