It’s the “Summer of 42” in 1955. You’re a 14-years-old-boy named Lenny, with hormones skyrocketing and you want to know everything about sex. So you sneak a peek on your parents, or at least try, until they ruin your plan and send you off for a summer in the country (a la Queens, New York) to visit your pregnant Aunt and her husband the Italian stallion. While away, Lenny (Ryan Merriman) learns about fantasy and reality, love and commitment, life and death, sex and affairs and more than he ever bargained for with the help of the lovely Hedy Collier (Gretchen Mol) who models bras (think Victoria’s Secret girl in the 50’s). It’s a charming, amusing roll down memory lane tale, when life was twin beds and corner stores. But, it has it’s unexpected twists and reality that even folks of circa 1950, Mayberry RFD style had to deal with. Divorce and affairs weren’t talked about, but they certainly occurred. By summer’s end, when Lenny returns home to Brooklyn, he’ll return a walking sex encyclopedia. Very charming directorial by “Seinfeld’s” Jason Alexander who works magic behind the camera much more eloquently than his best known character George Costanza.
