An adaptation of the critically-acclaimed off-Broadway rock theater hit, Hedwig tells the story of an “internationally ignored” rock singer and almost transsexual. Born in East Germany and transplanted by an American G.I. to a trailer park in Kansas, Hedwig explores the peculiar notion of fame American-style. This campy flick stars John Cameron Mitchell best known for the success of his off-Broadway version. While the film earned him awards at both the Sundance and Berlin festivals this year, it’s almost too disturbing to be entertaining and seems to drag on like the drag queens. The soundtrack, however, is the movie’s saving grace.
